Reading Response Journals

Reading Response Journal Questions 

1) Why did you choose this book?  What is on the cover?   What hints does the cover give you about what will happen in this book? 

2) What are the things you like best about the main character’s personality?  What do you like the least?  Why?  Is this someone you would want as a friend? Why or why not?

3) Which character in this book is least like you? Explain what he or she thinks or does that makes him or her so different from you.  Give examples from the book. 

4) Pick you favorite scene, describe it and tell why you like it.  What words does the author use to make it clear in your mind? 

5) Predict what you think will happen next in the book. Why do you think this is likely to happen?
6) If you could change something in the story, what would it be, and how would you change it? How might it affect the way the book ends?

7) Write a letter giving advice to one of the characters.

8) Write a letter to the author. What questions would you want to ask him/her? Do you have any suggestions for future books? What compliments would you like to give them about this book?

9) If you were going to give the main character some gifts, what would you give h them? Describe two or three presents they might like and tell why you chose them.

10) How would you describe the way you feel about this book? ( Love it, dislike it, bored by it, cant put it down, etc. ) Give an example of a part that really made you feel the way that you do.

11) Compare one event in the book to a current or past event in your life. 

12) Is there something in your book that makes you think of a famous person, place or thing? Explain and give examples

13) Compare this book to another book by the same author (you can use a Venn diagram, comparison chart, list or any other way to compare)

14) How is the book like or not like your own life? Explain

15) Does the character or topic remind you of your friends, family or classmates? Explain and give examples of each.

16) What character(s) in the book would you like to be? Why?

17) In what way(s) does the book remind you of other things your have read?

18) Write a brief review or recommendation of the book for someone else. Make sure to include the reasons that you would/ wouldn’t recommend it.
